Sarah and Me

About Sarah And Me:

Sarah Katz and Nancy Rosen grew up together in the projects of East New York during the 50s and 60s. Sarah, a talented artist, free spirit and committed Zionist, seemed destined for success and happiness but died tragically at a young age. Nancy, more conventional and timid, always believed she lived in Sarah’s shadow. Yet Nancy creates a successful career and a happy marriage. While Sarah is dissatisfied, restless and unfulfilled.

Through flashbacks interspersed with her eulogy for her friend, Nancy relives the past, trying to figure out what led to the tragedy. We see the two as preteens planning a day of ice-skating in Rockefeller Center, college students debating the wisdom of Sarah’s move to Israel with her boyfriend, David, and finally, as adults assessing their lives.

Was Sarah the brilliant star Nancy had imagined her to be? Or was Sarah a figment of her imagination, someone she needed to believe in? In coming to terms with Sarah’s life, Nancy learns to understand her own.

Writers Inspiration: Although the true story is not nearly as tragic. I do know people who in many ways resemble Sarah and Nancy. I did grow up in East New York. And I did attend George Gershwin Junior High School.
